Genre Review
In this unit, we analyze the overall differences between genres and review the collective class experiences with genres.
Biography
An in-depth look at the differences between biography, autobiography, and fictionalized biography. Students will ask questions about whose story do we read and how do we measure the authenticity of a text.
Non-Fiction: Informational Text and Narrative Non-Fiction
Examining in intricacies of informational text and how it is organized to convey specific information will be the focus of this unit. We will constantly ask ourselves to determine the author's point of view and perspective when reviewing this work.Non-Fiction - Informational Text Structures
iunit: Natural Disasters
After an overview of the ways that disasters work, students will select a specific Natural Disaster to research and construct a nonfiction magazine article incorporating multiple non-fiction text features.
High Fantasy
In this unit we will study the qualities of high fantasy to prepare the students to artfully navigate the complexity of the extremely popular middle school genre. This unit will include our first class wide book clubs.Fantasy
Poetry
In April, National Poetry Month, The students will lose themselves in the work of the great poets and reinforce their understanding of imagery, figurative language, and the musical rhythms of our language.Poetry
Leaping off to Middle School Book Clubs
Just before we head of to Middle School, our students will participate in a round of book clubs with books highlighting the middle school experience.
